STAAR Prep for the TEKS testing Math

Texas Math Leaders Conference 2016

This past June 29-July 1, thousands of Texas K-12 math teachers and administrators gathered at the  Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center here in San Antonio, Texas for the annual  Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (CAMT).   Sponsored by both the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Texas Association of Supervisors of Mathematics, and the Texas Section of the Mathematical Association of America. With a mission “to assist in upgrading the quality of mathematics education in the state of Texas by presenting an annual conference for teachers and supervisors of mathematics designed to improve the knowledge and skills of mathematics teachers and supervisors”. The three-day conference is on a rotating basis held in Fort Worth, Houston, or San Antonio.

According their site, there are nearly 750 sessions and workshops, ranging from 90 minutes to three hours. Exceptional speakers from all over the state and nation submit proposals to present sessions, and a program committee selects sessions most appropriate for the conference. Also, a large number of presenters are invited from all over the country to present featured sessions.

Most session presenters are accomplished, practicing mathematics teachers, who present ideas for teaching that they have found effective in their classrooms. It was an honor that our very own Libby Chaskin was once again a presenter at the conference. She has been a staple contributor since the late 80’s and a vendor since 1995 with L&M Education Resources, LLC presenting MathImagine interactive math tutoring tool.

Other outstanding speakers presented this year as well.  Some of the featured presenters were math education advocates all over the country like, Dr. Jo Boaler is a professor of mathematics education at Stanford University;  James Tanton is a research mathematician deeply interested in bridging the gap between the mathematics experienced by school students and the creative mathematics practiced and explored by mathematicians; Dr. Karen Karp is a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky) and works in classrooms to support teachers of students with disabilities in their mathematics instruction; Dan Meyer taught high school math to students who didn’t like high school math. He

has advocated for better math instruction on CNN, Good Morning America, Everyday With Rachel Ray, and TED.com; Dr. Judy Willis, a board-certified neurologist combined her 15 years as a practicing neurologist with ten subsequent years as a classroom teacher to become a leading authority in the neuroscience of learning; Dr. Treisman is professor of mathematics and of public affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. He is the founder and executive director of the University’s Charles A. Dana Center, an organized research unit of the College of Natural Sciences. Our booth was #125.  There was a tangible energy in the event center during the events. Don’t take our word for it, check out some of the latest tweets!
